West Robson Water System

System Description and Governance

The system was constructed in 1966 as part of a compensation program associated with the construction of the Keenlyside Dam. Some components were upgraded in 1997, 2001, and 2010.

In January 2011, ownership and operation of the West Robson system was transferred to the Regional District. This system was historically owned and operated by the West Robson Water Corporation, a subsidiary company of BC Hydro.

West Robson utilizes a SCADA system, which allows for remote system monitoring.

Annual Drinking Water Information

Size and Number of Connections

The system services 114 active connections, including two trailer parks. .

Location

The system is located on Broadwater Road in the community of West Robson on the western border of Robson-Raspberry, within RDCK Electoral Area J. West Robson is downstream of the Keenlyside dam on the Columbia River.

Source

The West Robson water system derives source water from two wells located off Broadwater Road. One of these wells was drilled in 1966 and the other was drilled in 2010. Both wells are approximately 40 metres deep.

Treatment

The wells supplying the West Robson water system are located in an aquifer that is presumed to be not directly under the influence of surface water. As such, no disinfection or filtration is required.

Storage

The system includes a 318,000 litre bolted steel reservoir.

Distribution System

The system includes 3,700 metres of asbestos cement mainlines, as well as 1,325 metres of copper service connection lines. A 2009 report found that the system's asbestos cement pipes will require replacement within a decade.

Fire-Fighting

This system does not provide fire-fighting capabilities since it does not have the number of hydrants necessary to do so.

Significant Issues

Asbestos cement pipes are due for replacement.

Plans for Future Upgrades

Water distribution system replacements planned starting in the near future.

Asset Management Planning

An Asset Management Plan (AMP) is complete and being updated annually.  The Asset Management Plan identifies required asset replacements over a 25 year and 100 year period and identifies annual contributions to water system reserves required to fund the replacements.
