Official results declared for referendum on Winlaw and area mosquito control

Nelson, BC:  The official results from the October 20 assent voting (referendum) regarding mosquito control services within a portion of Electoral Area H (Winlaw and area) have been declared by the Regional Chief Elections Officer. The referendum has been declared unsuccessful.

A total of 460 voters participated in the referendum, out of 1,107 voters on the voters list in the affected service area. Voter turnout on the referendum was 41.5%, with 339 votes for no and 118 votes for yes.

“I was impressed by the high voter turnout for the referendum,” said Walter Popoff, Director of Electoral Area H in the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK). “The community has given us their clear and decisive direction on this issue.”

Eligible voters were asked if they were in favour of the adoption of a bylaw providing for a Winlaw and Area Mosquito Control Service.

A mosquito control feasibility study was completed in early 2018 for a portion of Electoral Area H as a result of two related petitions submitted to the RDCK and an ensuing Board resolution. The potential area studied included the area north of Vallican as the southern boundary up to the south boundary of the Village of Slocan as the northern boundary. A public information meeting was held in Winlaw in April 2018 presenting the results of the feasibility study and offering an opportunity for community members to ask questions. The assent voting process was determined as the next step in the process. More information is available at www.rdck.ca/mcp.
