Evacuation Order reduced to ALERT for Renata

Nelson, BC: Upon recommendation from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) regarding the Bulldog Mountain wildfire, the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is downgrading the Evacuation Order for Renata and the area south-east to Brooklyn to an Evacuation ALERT, effective immediately. This reduction to an Alert means residents can return to their properties but must be prepared to leave should conditions change.

Further, the Evacuation Alert previously in effect for Brooklyn and south-east to Shields Point has been RESCINDED.

A map showing the area that remains under Evacuation ALERT is below, and can also be found on the RDCK website here.

“The BC Wildfire Service has advised that imminent danger to the life and property of persons due the Bulldog Mountain wildfire has diminished, so those who previously were required to evacuate can return home,” said Andrew Bellerby, the RDCK Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Director and Regional Fire Chief. “However, residents and visitors in the Renata alert area should still be prepared to evacuate if required. We will continue to monitor the situation and advise if anything changes.”

The RDCK will use the Dedicated Emergency Text List for Renata to inform those who have already signed up for critical updates.

The Bulldog Mountain wildfire (N52497) is being managed as part of the Syringa Complex of fires. It was discovered on August 11, 2018, and is suspected to have been caused by lightning. The fire is approximately 2,125 hectares in size. BCWS is still actively responding to the fire with firefighting crews, aviation support and heavy equipment. BCWS has informed the RDCK that they have good control lines on the fire adjacent to Renata, but they still recommend an alert remain in place until rain arrives.

The RDCK EOC will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
