RDCK Celebrates Local Government Awareness Week

NELSON—May 19—23 is Local Government Awareness Week and the Regional District of Central Kootenay is inviting residents to learn more about the role the RDCK plays in local communities.

“Local government is responsible for delivering many of the services that are part of everyday life,” says John Kettle, Chair of the RDCK. “Drinking water, waste and recycling, recreation facilities, fire protection, building inspection, bylaw enforcement, transit and emergency planning are just a few of the services that the RDCK delivers on behalf of our 60,000 residents.”

The RDCK is comprised of 11 electoral areas and 9 municipalities with a mission ‘to provide area residents and communities with services, governance and representation in a manner that supports the economic, social and environmental goals of the region.’

With the main administration office located in Nelson, the RDCK also has offices in Creston and Nakusp and owns and operates three multi-purpose recreation centres in Nelson, Castlegar and Creston. The RDCK employs over 350 full and part-time staff throughout its operations.

“I would encourage everyone to visit our newly revamped website at www.rdck.ca and explore the numerous services we provide to assist and serve our residents and the public,” says Kettle. “The RDCK Board and staff are proud to serve our residents and we invite your questions and comments through our website’s new feedback form.”

Local Government Awareness Week is an initiative of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and numerous partners.
