Grohman Narrows Transfer Station Opens July 8th

NELSON— On Tuesday July 8th, 2014 the new Grohman Narrows Transfer Station will be open to the public. The last operational day for waste disposal at the Nelson Transfer Station will be Saturday July 5th, 2014. Both sites will be closed on Sunday July 6th and Monday July 7th for the operational transition.

“The RDCK is thrilled to announce the opening of this new facility,” said Ron Mickel, Chair of the Central Resource Recovery Committee and Director for Area F.  “The facility provides a long term solution to waste management operations in the Nelson area, as well as providing a better facility for users.”

The new transfer station, located on Insight Drive off Highway 3A, has been in the works for more than three years. The new facility came in on time and under the $3.1 million dollar budget. It replaces the existing Nelson Transfer Station on leased land on Lakeside Drive.

The Grohman Transfer station is operationally more efficient due to the installation of new waste transfer equipment. It is also more spacious, allowing for better traffic flow while improving the user experience and overall site safety. Recycling facilities are provided at the new site; however, the primary recycling depot for public drop-off of bluebag materials and cardboard (residential and commercial) remains at the Lakeside Drive location.

This project is part of an overall investment in waste management facilities and infrastructure that will improve environmental performance as identified in the RDCK Resource Recovery Plan.

Hours of operation at the Grohman Narrows Transfer Station: Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
