Climate change guides most planning and decision-making. It is recognized as a defining component of our world. Below are some of the RDCK's key initiatives that address climate change.

Climate Change Adaptation Project

The Climate Change Adaptation Project included the Village of Kaslo and Electoral Area D in partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust. Read more.

Carbon Neutral Kootenays

The Carbon Neutral Kootenays (CNK) project was a partnership between three regional disticts (Central Kootenay, East Kootenay, and Kootenay Boundary) and Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) to meet the targets established under the climate action charter. Read more.

100% Renewable Kootenays by 2050 initiative

This initiative is led by the West Kootenay Eco-Society, and supported by the RDCK.

Partners for Climate Protection - Milestone 4

2017 actions include:

  • Castlegar Arena energy efficiency upgrades 
  • Agricultural Land Use Inventory & Agricultural Water Demand Modelling 
  • new fleet purchase of hybrid vehicles 
  • supporting the constructing of the Accelerate Kootenays EV network
  • update of Resource Recovery Plan to include community level organics diversion and zero waste strategies and corporate level upgrades to landfill and transfer facilities 
  • launching Kootenay Boundary Farm Advisors 
  • FireSmart ambassador and wildfire mitigation program 
  • WaterSmart ambassador program
  • developing climate adaptation indicators with Rural Development Institute 
  • launched the Senior Energy Specialist and implementation of SCEEP 
  • development of a Regional Residential Retrofit Program to increase energy efficiency and housing affordability
  • hiring a sustainability coordinator and relaunching the CSLAC

Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP)

The Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) is a conditional grant that provides funding to local governments that have signed to the BC Climate Action Charter that is equal to 100 percent of the carbons taxes they pay directly to support municipal operations. https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/local-governments/grants-transfers/climate-action-revenue-incentive-program-carip

Each year the RDCK submit a report of its corporate and community actions to reduce the impact of climate change.  In turn, the Provincial government issues a cheque. The 2017 CARIP grant contributed to the delivery of Regional Energy Efficiency Program.
